In September, a new student representative was selected for the Saline Area Schools Board of Education. Evan Thomas, a current Saline High School senior, was selected out of five finalists by Superintendent Scot Graden and Board President, Paul Hynek.
Evan’s interest in this opportunity surfaced after he attended a Board of Education meeting in May of this year. “The opportunity to help my fellow students and the community in this way is outstanding. As a student who wants to spend my life in the world of American politics, this is the first stop on a life-long journey of helping others.”
Over the years, this role has allowed administration in Saline to learn about issues facing our students through a unique platform. Superintendent Graden values student participants, like Evan, who are eager to add perspective. “Evan is a passionate young man who has shown great enthusiasm for learning about the American political system, American history and the American public education system. We are excited to add his student voice to our conversation.”
The student’s role is to act as the eyes and ears of the High School, according to President Paul Hynek. “Throughout the year, the student is asked to gather peers into two or three small groups (including administrators) to meet and discuss current district topics.”
Through various leadership positions and involvement in local and school-based politics, Evan is ready to help the Board however possible. “Saline Area Schools is held to a very high standard by our community. We must continue to push the boundaries of greatness as described by our district’s motto - the pursuit of excellence.”
