SAS DEI Parent Education Series with Channon Washington

Channon Washington, SAS Consultant for Culturally Responsive Teaching, will be hosting a 3 part series of informational sessions for SAS parents/guardians, explaining the purpose and content of Culturally Responsive Instruction. These sessions will explore the district and building level focus of continuing the diversity, equity, and inclusion work that has already been accomplished, and setting SAS up for culturally responsive success for years to come. Following the learning experience, we will open up to parents’ questions, concerns, and wonderings about what they’ve learned.

Saline High School Science Olympiad off to a Strong Start

The cancellation of the 2020 season last year meant the Saline High School Science Olympiad competition team had to pivot to new goals.  After a very productive summer of giving back to the community in this time of need and being featured on WXYZ for their efforts, the fall arrived, and the team trained to work in a new virtual setting.

Saline HS Debate Team Wins State Titles

In a year that many want to forget and move forward, the Saline Debate Team will fondly remember 2020 because they won state titles and many other awards. The Varsity High School Debate Team, of seniors Abby Berwick and Paige Haddas, took first place in the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association state finals. They debated the resolution that the United States should adopt a declaratory nuclear policy of no first use. Additionally, the Novice High School Congressional Debate Team, specifically first year Sarah Yousif, took first place in the state competition.

SMS Science Olympiad Lake Braddock Competition
The SMS Science Olympiad team competed in the Lake Braddock Science Olympiad Competition on Saturday, December 12, 2020. This was a Nationwide competition with 91 schools participating.

SAS Board of Education Statement
On behalf of the Board of Education and the students, faculty, and staff, we’d like to offer congratulations on Superintendent Scot Graden’s pending January 29, 2021 retirement and acknowledge and thank him for his exceptional leadership of Saline Area Schools.  During his tenure with the district, his accomplishments are many. Beginning in 1999 in Community Education and for the last 13 years as Superintendent, he has shaped our culture and improved the quality of education in Saline beyond measure.
