Math Counts -

When: Mondays October - February from 3-4pm

Where: Ms. Reik's Room (B205) in the 8th grade pod

Who: Any 6th - 8th graders who enjoy fun math challenges & puzzles

Students are welcome to attend any and all meetings!  

MathCounts is a national program for middle schoolers.  It meets weekly to go through fun problems and talk about strategies and approaches!  We will be gearing up for our county competition held annually in February.

Builders Club - Builders Club website

Meeting Times:  7:15-7:45am Everyother Thursday in the SMS Hotspot  (First meeting - Sept 5th)

Who: any 6th - 8th graders with a desire to make a positive difference in their community. 


Science Olympiad

Meeting Times:  Thursdays from 3:00-5:00 pm (sometimes until 6:00 pm) and Saturdays from 2:00-5:00 pm

Location - Fanning/Fiske Science Rooms - G106/G104 

Fees:  $50 registration 

Purpose of club: Team based participation in Science Olympiad, with invitational competitions leading to regional and hopefully state level participation.  We are encouraging the exploration and learning of many different science and engineering concepts while bringing team enthusiasm and pride.

Robotics Club

Meeting Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Fees: $65 (payable to Saline Area Schools with SMS Robotics in the memo line)

Purpose of club: Explore the possibilities of STEM through designing, building, programming and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format.   Practice engineering principles while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas.

Boys Choir

Meeting Times: Friday 7:10-7:50am in choir room

Purpose:  This choir for boys only sings at four concerts during the year.  They sing fun choral music of varying styles in two-part harmony.  New members join in September and mid-December.

Girls Choir

Meeting Times: Wednesdays 7:10-7:50 a.m. 

Purpose:  Girls Choir membership is by audition.  Auditions are open to girls enrolled in band, choir or orchestra during the day.  Girls Choir sings advanced music of varying styles in unison or two- or three-part harmony.  Girls Choir performs at four evening concerts during the year and one weekend choir festival in early March.

Drama Club -

Meeting Times: Fridays at 3:00-4:15 pm - No drama club when school is not in session.

All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are welcome. Can't come to the meeting this week? No problem. We meet every Friday. No signing up necessary, just show up when you can, ready to have fun, play games, and learn about drama. Contact Ms. Glatz with any questions.

Fiddle Club

Group for students in grades 6th 7th or 8th who play violin, viola, cello or bass to learn how to play and perform folk fiddling music. The emphasis will be on learning how to play folk fiddling music from all over the world as well as each of the regional American styles. Purpose of the club:  To provide student leadership opportunities and to serve the student body, the school, and the community.

Quiz Bowl -

Purpose of Club - Quiz bowl is to provide students a fun and competitive outlet to test their knowledge against their peers.

Meeting times: Every Tuesday starting January 21st  through February 25th from 3:00-3:45pm in Mrs. Schwartzenberger's room - R101 (across from the office)

SMS is allowed to take four students and one alternate from each grade to the SEMMLAA Quiz Bowl (at Saline Middle School) on Saturday February 29th from 8-11:30am. Students will know if they are selected for this event by the end of week five.

Girls on the Run/Heart and Sole

Location: P102 (Mrs. Smeltzer's room)

The season runs through December 6th, with a mock 5k taking place in November around our school and local community. There will be a real 5k on Sunday, November 24th on the St. Joe's Hospital grounds.
