CAREERS IN EDUCATION 1

Requirements: Grades 11-12 only, Application Required, Full Year Program, Child Development Recommended

This hands-on program is designed for juniors and seniors who want to explore a career in education. Students will earn training hours recorded in MiRegistry, a central database that tracks the professional development and qualifications of early childhood educators and people working with school-age youth programs. Professional Training: Students will learn basic education principles, classroom management, lesson planning, and important professional responsibilities. Key topics include teaching methods, child development, classroom management, and creating a safe environment for all students. Students will also work towards professional credentials like the Michigan Youth Development Associate (MI-YDA) for school-age youth or the Child Development Associate (CDA) for early childhood and preschool ages. Field Experience: The SWWC instructor will help place students with a mentor teacher in their home district, based on their age/subject interests. In the classroom, students will gain hands-on experience by tutoring small groups, assisting with projects, helping with classroom preparation, observing, documenting, and eventually teaching their own lessons. Students can also attend field trips and training through FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America), a national, co-curricular organization embedded into this course. College credit may be available at various colleges throughout Michigan.

Requirements: Grade 12 only, Application Required, Full Year Program, Child Development Recommended, Successful Completion of Careers in Education 1

This course is designed for high school students who are actively interested in pursuing a career in education. Building on the foundational skills from the first-year curriculum, students will explore key topics, including Strategic Partnerships in Education, supporting Special Populations and Diverse Learners, and Program Development. Students will learn to assess student progress through effective assessment techniques and gain leadership skills through the FCCLA Leadership opportunities and the chance to compete with their assignments. Additionally, students will continue to engage in Work-Based Learning and Classroom Placements, applying their knowledge in real-world settings. By completing this course, students will continue to work towards their MI-YDA (Michigan Youth Development Associate) credential or CDA (Child Development Associate), further preparing them for a successful future in the field of education. Lastly, upon successful completion of this course, direct credit is available with many Michigan colleges and universities.
